The Southern Oregon Department of Theatre Arts presents two productions during the 2008 winter term. “Urinetown” by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis runs Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 21-23, Feb.28-March 1, and March 6-8 at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, March 2 and 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Center Stage Theatre at Southern Oregon University. With a theme of pay-as-you-go toilets and water rationing, it might seem hard in this musical to see the bright side of life. But love and hope abound in this biting satire set in a Gotham-like city during a 20-year drought. “One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, ‘Urinetown’ is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold,” says Music Theatre International. Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for “Best Original Score” and “Best Book of a Musical.” “Many Moons” by James Thurber, adapted from his book by Charlotte Chorpenning, is the children’s theatre offering at Southern Oregon University, running on Feb. 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and March 1 at 7:00 p.m., on Feb. 16, 17, 23, 24, and March 2 at 2:00 p.m., and additional performances at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on March 1 at the Center Square Theatre. Ten-year-old Princess Lenore ate too many raspberry tarts and believes that the moon will take away her stomach ache. The King’s wise counselors are at a loss. The clever Court Jester has insights that hold a happy resolution to a quest for the moon. Tickets are $17 regular, $14 senior, $5 students.
